Specialty Testing: ERMI & HERTSMI

For clients who require advanced mold screening, we offer ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index) and HERTSMI-2 testing. These specialty assessments use DNA-based analysis (qPCR) to detect specific mold species commonly associated with water-damaged buildings. Results are scored and compared against reference ranges to estimate mold load within the environment.

While we provide this service upon request, UMP does not typically recommend ERMI/HERTSMI as a first-line test, as these methods were developed primarily for research and epidemiological studies, not routine residential diagnostics. Results can be misleading if taken without context, which is why professional interpretation is essential.

We ensure you understand what these tests can — and cannot — tell you.

What Is ERMI/HERTSMI Testing?

ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index)
Uses DNA-based analysis on dust samples to evaluate mold species associated with water-damaged buildings. Results generate an index score indicating relative moldiness.

HERTSMI-2
A simplified version of ERMI that focuses on five specific mold species. Often used in situations involving chronic illness or hypersensitivity.

Many clients request these tests when:

  • Working with a functional medicine provider

  • Dealing with CIRS or mold-related illness

  • Seeking deeper mold screening beyond standard testing

  • Evaluating long-term mold exposure in a home

Important Testing Considerations (Our Disclaimer)

While ERMI/HERTSMI can be useful in certain cases, clients should understand the limitations:

  • Not all mold species are included, only a select group

  • Results can be skewed by cleaning habits and dust accumulation

  • These tests do not evaluate active spore levels in the air

  • Detection limits vary, meaning low-level mold may be missed

  • Scores alone should not dictate remediation decisions without context

Testing is typically performed using dust or surface collection, which may not represent current airborne conditions. Because of this, ERMI/HERTSMI are best viewed as supplemental tests, not standalone diagnostics.

We recommend pairing specialty testing only when medically requested or functionally relevant, often alongside standard mold/IAQ testing for a complete picture.
